The Barrow Steward and the Shrouded Guardian - Elder Duelling Set

Tom had always enjoyed the wandering. His wife kept the hearth — she always had, for as long as he could remember. No children of their own, though she’d wished for them once. Every few centuries she would take in a stray instead. Teach them. Heal them. Send them back out into a world that changed far too quickly for his liking. Why, it felt like only yesterday he’d shown a little mongrel named Atur how to coax flame from damp kindling. Now the Mon‑kee children built cities, raised armies, and carved their ambitions into the bones of the earth. But even with all their noise and new ways, some things never changed. Children still wandered where they shouldn’t. Tom paused at the crest of the hill, looking down at the barrows — ancient mounds slumped like sleeping giants. He heard laughter. Real children this time, mortal and bright, chasing each other between stones older than their grandparents’ stories. Their joy tugged at something deeper. Something restless. Tom leaned on his walking stick, listening as the wind shifted. The earth beneath the barrows gave a slow, uneasy sigh — the kind that meant old dreams were stirring, and old memories were waking. “Ah,” he murmured. “Best keep an eye on this.”

Tom waited until the last of the children’s footsteps faded into the tree line before he let the breath slip from his chest. The barrow stones hummed faintly under his palm — a low, ancient note, like a memory trying to surface. “You’re waking too soon,” he whispered. “The world isn’t ready for you yet.” The shroud inside the barrow shifted again, not with anger, but with the slow ache of something remembering its purpose. The Wight had been a guardian once, long before the Crown Wars, long before the Hunters, long before Tom himself had learned the old songs. But guardians left alone too long forget what they were guarding. Tom stepped back, letting the cold settle around him. He could feel the Wight’s attention — not hostile, not hungry, just… aware. Aware in the way old things are aware, like a mountain noticing a single falling stone. “Rest,” Tom murmured. “I’ll handle the little ones.” The barrow quieted. The pact held.

But as Tom turned toward the ridge, he saw movement again — not the children this time, but Three silhouettes cresting the hill. Hunters. Moving fast. Moving with purpose. Tom felt the old tension coil in his chest — the same tension he’d felt the night the Crown first cracked, the night the world began to tilt toward war again. “So it BEGINS,” he said softly, and the barrow behind him answered with a faint, mournful sigh.

Lore

The Barrow Steward is one of the last keepers of the old songs — a wanderer who tends the sleeping mounds and maintains the ancient pacts that predate the Crown Wars themselves. His counterpart, the Shrouded Guardian, is a spectral wight bound to the barrows, a once‑noble sentinel whose purpose has eroded under centuries of solitude. Their uneasy bond anchors one of the earliest sparks of the Companions Arc, where forgotten guardians, wandering stewards, and mortal children collide with forces older than kingdoms.

⚔️ Tactics

This Elder Duelling Set is built for atmospheric skirmishes, narrative encounters, and character‑driven scenarios. The Barrow Steward excels as a control/support piece, redirecting threat, stabilizing volatile encounters, and interacting with spectral or ancient entities. The Shrouded Guardian functions as a slow, territorial elite, exerting area denial, punishing proximity, and anchoring the battlefield with spectral presence. Commanders field this pair when they want tension, asymmetry, and a duel that plays out like a story rather than a clash of numbers.

Scenario Hook

A wandering child disturbs an ancient barrow, awakening the Shrouded Guardian and forcing Tom, last steward of the old ways, into a tense confrontation between mortal duty and spectral memory. This Crown Wars scenario captures the first spark of conflict in the Companions Arc — a narrative clash of barrow magic, spectral guardians, and forgotten pacts. Perfect for players seeking atmospheric encounters, lore‑driven skirmishes, and character‑focused fantasy battles.
