The Watchtower — Narrative Scenario Pack

I shouldn’t have climbed the ridge. Tom said the wind up here bites, and he was right — it tastes like old iron and wet stone. The watchtower looks smaller than the stories say, just a ring of mossy blocks leaning like they’re tired. I don’t see anything strange. But the air feels… crowded. Like someone else is breathing beside me, only quieter.

The dogs back home bark at the soil, not the sky, so maybe this is normal. Maybe towers just feel like this when the weather’s wrong. I take another step. The wind pushes back. My lantern flickers. Something cold brushes my shoulder, but when I turn, there’s only the ridge and the dark doorway.

I tell myself it’s nothing. I tell myself the tower is just old. I tell myself the Crown Wars are far away.

I don’t know what I don’t know.

I remember nothing of my name. Only the Crown. Only the moment it broke and took me with it. The watchtower stones hum tonight — a low, grinding note that pulls at the chains wrapped around what used to be my ribs. I rise because the Crown stirs beneath the ridge, calling its lost pieces home. I do not walk. I am pulled. The wind drags through me like a hand searching for something it buried long ago.

The halfling below does not see me. They never do. But they feel me. Their breath shortens. Their heart stumbles. The Crown wants me to find what was shattered. I obey. I always obey. I have no choice. I have no ETERNITY except the one it gave me.

Lore

The watchtowers along the borderlands weren't built for glorious last stands—they were built to keep sheep out of the ditches and sound the alarm when local raiders crossed the river. Now, isolated on a lonely ridge, a handful of smallfolk travel-hands, a tired northern track-cutter, and an itinerant earth-sage find themselves trapped inside as the temperature violently drops. The Nine Veilbound do not march with drums or banners; they drift across the frost as silent, oath-sworn cold that curdles milk, kills fires, and slowly unstrings mortal courage. There is no relief coming from the valley garrison. The horn can be blown until the sergeant's lungs burst, but tonight, the only thing between seven terrified souls and the frost-dead is a locked oak door and two feet of crumbling stone.

Tactical Role

This Narrative Scenario Pack delivers an asymmetrical, survival-driven skirmish defined by claustrophobic defense, light-source management, and asymmetric morale pressure. Designed for tight, character-driven encounters or RPG side-quests, it pits a fragile, utility-focused band of defenders against a relentless, morale-breaking enemy cadre. Success for the defenders relies on clever use of choke points, ranged harrying, and holding out for specific turn thresholds, while the Veilbound player uses aura effects, fear tests, and direct line-of-sight denial to systematically collapse the tower's defenses.
