Crown Wars Battle Box: Assault on the Dark Spire
The Valley of the Dark Spire
The heat inside the lower gatehouse didn’t come from the sun. It came through the stone floor, baking the soles of our boots until the leather smelled like singed grease.
I was six turns into my shift at the iron winch when the water in the cooling trough began to jump. Not ripple—jump. Little beads of black, soot-stained water bouncing two inches off the surface like dry peas in a hot skillet.
"Check the sluice-pin," Sergeant Vance growled. He didn't look up from his ledger. His gambeson was dark with armpit sweat, and he’d unbuttoned his collar to let the steam out. "The furnace boys are dumping the slag-run again. The pressure’s climbing." I stepped to the arrow-slit, but I didn't look at the gauges. I looked at the valley floor. The smoke from the lower foundries usually hung flat over the pines, thick and grey as wet wool. Today, the smoke was moving backwards. A cold, damp wind was blowing up the valley, pushing the furnace ash right back down our throats. And beneath the smoke, the treeline wasn't where it was yesterday. The outer timber palisade—twenty feet of shaved pine driven four feet deep into the rock—was leaning.
"Sergeant," I said. My throat was dry from the coal dust. "The wood's coming up."
"Wood doesn't come up," Vance muttered, dipping his quill. "It sits where the gang hammers it." Then the main drainage arch groaned. It was a wet, tearing sound—like an old oak split by lightning, but muffled under thirty feet of river mud. The iron grate didn't snap; the stone archway around it simply gave way as thick, pale roots, broad as a draft horse's thigh, forced their way through the mortar. They didn't punch through; they grew through, expanding in the dark until the ancient masonry burst like over-soaked timber.
The river came with them. Not a clean wave, but a surging slurry of scalding steam, black mud, and shattered stone. Vance dropped his quill. The ink pot rolled off the desk, but nobody watched it spill.
"Form on the upper step!" Vance screamed, his voice cracking on the soot. "Crossbows to the rail! Don't look at the water—look at the trees!"
The stone was hot beneath my bark, but the cold was behind us.
For three hundred rings, the valley had breathed ash. We felt the iron teeth gnawing at the deep roots, tasting the bitter copper wash in the underground springs long before the iron towers broke the skyline.
We were patient.
Trees know that stone eventually becomes soil, and iron eventually turns to rust.
But they dug too deep. They reached the sleeping water.
I stood on the northern lip of the furnace basin and let my deep fibers drink the cold rain. Around me, the young pines—the ones sprouted since the metal-men built their spires—were trembling with eagerness. They did not remember the quiet centuries, but they knew the smell of burned resin.
Below us, the iron towers looked small. They built them tall to reach the sky, but they forgot to bind them to the earth.
I did not give a war cry. I simply let the weight of the mountain river shift six inches to the west.
The stone channels the metal-men had carved to drain their smithies could not hold the high-water run. The river remembered its old bed—the deep, winding path through the center of the valley where their main gates now stood. When the water touched the roots beneath the stone, the roots reached up to drink. We moved as the flood moved. Not rushing. Just filling the empty spaces.
Through the steam, I saw the little metal-men scurrying onto the upper ledges, their iron clothes shining in the furnace glare. They pointed their notched sticks at the tree line. They thought the danger was coming from the air.
They did not understand that the VALLEY itself was simply closing its hand.
Lore
The Dark Spire was built as a subterranean furnace and industrial redoubt—a jagged tower of iron and black stone choking the valley with soot while its foundries churned out weapons for the Pale Hand Dominion. But the land itself has reached its breaking point. Awakened from their deep sleep by the relentless destruction of root and stone, the ancient forces of the Old Forest have descended upon the valley to tear the spire down from its foundations. As a renegade White Wizard attempts to hold the industrial complex, the garrison finds itself trapped between surging floodwaters and an unforgiving forest that takes no captives. This is not a clash of grand ideals; it is an industrial slaughterhouse being reclaimed by the wild.
Tactical Role
This Narrative Battle Box centers on an intense, asymmetric siege-and-breakout scenario set around an industrial fortress choke point. The Garrison of the Dark Spire relies on ranged crossfire, light infantry screening, and goblin weight-of-numbers to hold the outer walls and furnace gates. Meanwhile, the Forces of the Old Forest field high-impact, terrifying monstrous units paired with lethal skirmish archers to breach the gates and crush the defenders in tight, brutal melee before the garrison can lock down the fortress.
