The Goblin Hero
There — movement.
Not the flicker of torchlight on stone, not the shifting dust from the Troll’s steps. People. Shapes slipping between the pillars, careful, quiet, respectful in a way my warriors never are. Companions. Heroes. Interlopers.
I freeze.
The hall was supposed to be empty. A shrine. A place we would claim before anyone knew we were here. But now I see them — lantern held low, blades drawn but not raised, eyes tracing the carvings on the pillars as if they understand what sleeps in the stone.
They shouldn’t be here. They shouldn’t see this place. They shouldn’t breathe this air.
My warriors murmur behind me, confused. The Troll snorts, impatient. I raise a hand for silence. The hall listens. The carvings listen. The mountain listens.
The companions move deeper. And I feel my moment slipping away.
Not yet. Not yet. But soon.
The Mountain Troll
The goblins stop.
I do not understand why. The hall is quiet, the stone is heavy, the pillars whisper their old names. But the goblins freeze like prey that has smelled a predator. I taste the air. I hear the faint scrape of boots on stone. I feel the tremor of living hearts.
Heroes.
The hall tightens around me. The carvings seem to lean closer. The stone remembers them — remembers their kind — remembers battles fought long before the goblins crawled into these roads.
I breathe, slow and deep. Dust falls. The pillars shiver.
The goblin hero lifts his blade, not to strike, but to signal. Not yet. Not yet.
But soon.
The companions have entered the Hall of the Fallen. And the mountain has NOTICED.

ENCOUNTER LORE
The deep roads are never truly quiet. Not if you know how to listen.
I’ve been crouching among the fallen masonry long enough for the dust to settle on my shoulders, long enough for the cavern's chill to sink deep. The companions are close — too close — moving with the cautious confidence of surface-dwellers who think the dark is empty.
It isn't. It belongs to us.
The shelter they’re seeking isn't a refuge. It's a kill-zone. A hall built on forgotten bones from wars the world above has completely written out of history.
I watch their hammer-master move through the hall, his lantern casting long, harsh shadows against the carved stone. He's good — disciplined, steady, seasoned. A dwarf who’s fought enough tunnel fights to know when the air turns sour.
He doesn't know how sour.
My warband is spread across the ledges and broken pillars, every goblin tucked into the chamber's geometry: behind shattered arches, inside dark alcoves, perched high on ruined overhangs. We’ve held our breath since the lantern first flickered at the threshold.
The signal is simple. A sharp whistle that cuts through the silence like a snapped cord.
I give it.
The mountain holds its breath.
Bowstrings snap. Iron clashes on stone. The Troll lunges through the arch.
The stand in the Fallen Hall begins.
