Eastbound on the High Moors

The moors were too wide, too open, too silent. The Crown‑Bearer walked a few paces ahead, cloak snapping in the wind like it wanted to leave him behind. I kept my eyes low, watching the heather bend and ripple. Storm coming. Or something worse.

We’d lost the path hours ago. The sky was a dull iron lid, pressing down on us. The Crown‑Bearer said nothing, but I could feel the weight on him — the Crown in his pack, the duty in his bones. He carries the world. I carry the pack. Seems fair enough.

Then the wind shifted. A shape crouched on a stone outcrop, small but wrong in the way shadows are wrong when they move against the light. Long arms. Broad hands. Eyes like polished amber catching the last scraps of daylight.

What in all the green hills is that?

The Crown‑Bearer froze. I nearly walked into him. The creature tilted its head, studying us with a strange, deliberate curiosity. Not hungry. Not afraid. Just… aware.

It tapped the stone twice with its knuckles. Is that a warning? A greeting? A threat? Saints preserve us, I wish he’d blink.

The Crown‑Bearer stepped forward, slow and steady, as if approaching a skittish pony. The creature mirrored him, inch for inch, movement for movement. When he raised a hand, it raised one too — long fingers splayed like branches.

Then it hopped down, landing soft as a falling leaf. It sniffed the air, circled us once, and tugged lightly at my sleeve. It wants us to follow. Of course it does. Why wouldn’t the moors give us a guide that looks like a nightmare with manners? The creature bounded ahead, glancing back to be sure we kept pace. And somehow, I knew: We were no longer lost.

“Eastbound on the Moor‑Road”

(As told by the Dwarven Merchant, Barrek Stonewain, from the driver’s seat of his creaking cart)

The moors were empty as a drained keg, which suited me fine. Fewer eyes, fewer hands, fewer fools wanting to haggle over ironwork they couldn’t forge in their dreams. My mule, Old Bristle, plodded along with the same stubborn rhythm he’d kept for twenty years. Good beast. Smarter than most customers.

Wind cut sideways across the cart, tugging at my beard braids. “Storm brewing,” I muttered. Bristle flicked an ear, which meant I know, keep driving.

Then I saw them.

Two small shapes on the rise ahead — halflings by the look of them, though one carried himself like he’d swallowed a thundercloud. Cloak whipping, shoulders tight. The other trudged behind, pack nearly as big as he was with a Gardners spade looped on the side. Travelers on the moor at dusk. Odd choice.

But it was the third figure that made me pull the reins.

A creature — long‑armed, quick‑moving, perched on a stone like it owned the place. Eyes bright as amber in a forge. It tapped the rock twice, then scampered around the halflings like a pup greeting old friends.

“By the Deep Anvil… what are you then?” I whispered.

Bristle snorted, unimpressed.

The halflings noticed me at last. The solemn one — for even I could feel the weight of something on him — raised a hand in greeting. The creature mimicked him, fingers splayed like a fan of chisels.

I clicked my tongue and steered the cart closer. “If you’re bound east, I’ve room on the bench. Storm’ll swallow this moor whole before long.”

The Gardener looked ready to weep with relief. The other only nodded, solemn as a stone king. The creature hopped onto the back of the cart without asking permission.

Bristle didn’t protest.

That worried me more than anything. I eased my kindling axe in my belt. No sense in taking any chances where profit isn't in the game.

As we rolled eastward, the moor wind at our backs, I had the uneasy sense that I’d just picked up more than passengers.

I’d picked up a STORY.

Lore

Barrek Stonewain has hauled goods across the high moors for nearly forty years, following roads most folk forget existed. His cart is a rolling workshop, storeroom, and home — reinforced oak beams, iron‑banded wheels, and a canvas hood patched more times than he cares to admit. Every dent in the frame has a story, and every crate carries something useful, curious, or mildly dangerous.

Travelers say Barrek’s arrival is never chance. He appears when storms gather, when paths vanish, or when the road demands a witness. Some claim the mule, Old Bristle, chooses the route and Barrek simply follows. Others whisper that the cart itself remembers the old ways and steers clear of trouble — or toward it, when the world needs a nudge.

When the Crown‑Bearer and his companion wandered the moors under an iron sky, it was Barrek’s cart that found them first.

⚔️ Tactics

The Merchant Cart is a multi‑role battlefield asset designed for scenario play, objective control, and line‑of‑sight manipulation across all Crown Wars scales.

  • Mobile Cover — The cart blocks line‑of‑sight as it moves, letting infantry advance behind it or reposition safely during ranged exchanges.

  • Terrain Anchor — When stationary, the cart creates natural choke points, slows charges, and forces enemy units into predictable lanes.

  • Neutral Unit Behavior — The cart follows a fixed, predictable path, allowing players to plan ambushes, rescues, or timed objective interactions around its movement.

  • Resource Node — In supply‑based missions, controlling the cart for a full turn grants healing items, quest tokens, or scenario‑specific resources, making it a high‑value mid‑board objective.

  • Scenario Synergy — Works seamlessly with Crown‑Bearer missions, Companion escort scenarios, and storm‑front encounters where the cart’s movement determines the flow of the battle.

This kit excels in narrative play, objective‑driven skirmishes, and mixed‑faction encounters.
