Ride of the Wraiths - Faceoff at the Riverbed
The halfling weighs almost nothing in my arms, but every breath he takes feels like a stone dropping into a well. Fever has taken him. Or something older. The ridge wind claws at my cloak as the horse stumbles down the slope, hooves slipping on loose shale. Behind us, the wraiths do not shout or howl — they simply follow, their silence louder than any hunt.
I keep my eyes forward. The watchtower is shrinking behind us, swallowed by the ridge. The halfling murmurs something about cold iron and dogs barking at soil. He doesn’t know what he’s saying. He doesn’t know what’s waking.
I tighten my grip and whisper a word that steadies the horse. I will not let the Crown take him. Not tonight. Not while breath still warms his chest. The wraiths can chase the wind if they wish. I ride for the lowlands, where the soil is quieter and the shadows do not remember my name.
The rider is nothing but cold hunger wrapped in old armor. I feel its will through the reins that no longer exist. I was a horse once — I remember grass, and rain, and the weight of a living saddle. Now I remember only the Crown. The Broken Crown. The one that shattered my master and dragged me with him into this half‑life.
The elf flees down the ridge. Her horse breathes. I do not. My hooves strike stone without sound. The Crown’s call vibrates through my bones, urging me forward, urging me to reclaim what was lost. The halfling she carries glows faintly to my dead eyes — not with magic, but with memory. The land remembers him. The Crown remembers him.
I run because I must. I run because the CROWN commands. I run because eternity has teeth, and they are in my spine.
