Narrative Beat
The Unfree Slingers insist they serve willingly; the forests politely note Avalon magic makes “willing” a flexible term.

Lore

The Unfree Slingers are one of the most haunting detachments within the Wilds of Avalon—mortals bound by ancient grove‑oaths, compelled to serve the ley‑paths until their debt to the forest is repaid. Some were oathbreakers, others were wanderers who accepted fae bargains without understanding the cost, and a few were simply caught in the wrong grove at the wrong moment. Whatever their origin, Avalon’s magic holds them fast.

Clad in simple ash‑cloth and bark‑woven wraps, the Unfree Slingers wield rune‑weighted stone slings grown from the forest itself. Their ammunition is enchanted river‑stone, heartwood resin pellets, or crystallized fae‑dust shards that strike with unnatural force. Though bound, they are not mindless—each Slinger retains enough will to fight with grim determination, guided by the whispering ley‑spirits that direct their volleys.

In Avalon conflicts, Unfree Slingers are deployed when commanders need disciplined ranged support, expendable skirmishers, or troops who will hold their ground even when hope falters.

Tactical Role
Unfree Slingers serve as light ranged infantry, specializing in harassment volleys, terrain‑flexible repositioning, and steady battlefield pressure. Their enchanted sling‑stones disrupt enemy formations, stagger advancing units, and create openings for Avalon’s more powerful fae‑touched forces. Commanders field them when reliable ranged support, low‑cost deployment, and eerie discipline are required to shape the early flow of battle.
